What is 1/3 ÷ 2/3? (Keep reading – or just scroll to the bottom of this blog – for the answer.)

Now, you probably didn’t start your day out thinking, “You know what I need in my life? More problems.”

Can you solve the #dailymathproblem?

That is, of course, before you read this blog about our newest social media feature “Math Problem of the Week” aka #mpow, where we’ll be posting a new math problem each week  – and we’ll also provide the answer along with how to solve it (see the end of this post. So if you’re not following us on Twitter or haven’t yet liked us on Facebook, you should or you will be missing out!

We’re not talking about crazy equations like this*:  $z_{n+1} = z_n^2 + c,$$c \in M \iff \lim_{n \to \infty}|z_{n+1}| \leq 2$

Instead, we’re talking about problems that flex your brain muscles a little bit. Or problems that you can challenge your kids with. The featured math problem will be the kind of problem that you would find playing one of our games. Since our games are aligned to standards from grades 3-6, this is your chance to ask yourself “Are you smarter than a fifth grader?” Even better, it’s a way to challenge your own fifth grader. You might be surprised to find that he knows how to multiply fractions better than you do!

Sure, you could always just use a calculator to cheat, but don’t look at these as problems. Look at them as pushups for your brain.

So, What is 1/3 ÷ 2/3? ANSWER: 1/2

Explanation: Use reciprocal multiplication to solve. In other words, flip the second fraction and multiply, so 1/3 * 3/2 -> 1*3/2*3 -> 3/6-> 1/2
