Game Design Syllabus


INTRO TO GAME DESIGN

7 Generation Games Game Design Unit is developed for Grades 5 through 12.* 

Lesson 1

Introduction to game design: Terms, game review, game design documents.

  • Read intro and game design terms.
  • Play at least 3 games.
  • Familiarize yourself with Google apps.
  • Create notes document on games played and record your observations.
  • Read example game design documents.

Lesson 2

Understanding software enhancement: Game revisions, bug reporting

  • Select game to revise or expand (for the focus of the Lesson 7 presentation)
  • Play through the selected game getting all of answers correct
  • Add to notes document on game played and record your observations.
  • Complete software enhancement worksheet for game selected – Overview
  • Introduction to Bug Reporting
  • Read additional example game design documents

Lesson 3

Deeper dive into game design: Breaking down elements

  • Play through the selected game getting ALL of answers WRONG (this will take you at least two hours). 
  • Add to notes document on game played and record your observations.
  • Complete software enhancement worksheets for game selected – Focus Areas
  • Watch When Games Invade Real Life OR Read chapters 1-3 of The Art of Game Design by Jesse Schell

Lesson 4

Better games, better world: An inside look inside the game design process

  • Edit notes to include ideas from the video or reading from Lesson 3.
  • Attend game design meeting via Google hangout.
  • Complete remaining software enhancement worksheets for game selected – Focus Areas
  • Watch Gaming Can Make a Better World by Jane McGonigal

Lesson 5

Real-world applications: Critical thinking and professional skills development

  • Edit notes to include ideas from the video from Lesson 4.
  • Outline presentation or report to be given/submitted in Lesson 7. 
  • For those opting to present, craft a brief professional email to request a meeting with the software team to present your feedback and game suggestions.
  • Watch “Everything I Learned About Level Design, I Learned from Disneyland” by Scott Rogers OR Read chapters 1-3 of Level Up: The Guide to Great Video Game Design by Scott Rogers

Lesson 6

Getting your point across: Preparing presentations/reports

  • Edit notes to include ideas from the video or reading from Lesson 5.
  • Prepare feedback/enhancement presentation using Powerpoint or Google Slides. Five-minute presentation plus five-minutes of discussion. For those who prefer not to present, draft a 1-2 page game design report.
  • Confirm meeting time/date. 

Lesson 7

Game design in action: Insights, enhancements and feedback

  • Present to software design team via Google hangout. OR Submit game design report.

*While students from any grade my access this curriculum, students must be in at least 5th grade for 7 Generation Games design meeting drop-in (Lesson 5) and presentations (Lesson 7). Students from younger grades may still submit a report and will receive feedback (Lesson 7).
