Proud of My Hispanic Heritage

Being Hispanic is not just about the food and parties, there’s so much history behind it, including the hard work and struggles that remind us of where we came from. Being Hispanic is one of the things I’m most proud of, and I know it’s something that can’t be taken away from me.

Jazmin Gonzalez Vega

Hi, I’m Daniel (Country manager for Latin America). I’m 100% Latino and I actually never heard of Hispanic Heritage Month before. You might wonder, “How can that be possible?” Well, since I live in Chile – a long narrow strip of land between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean – being surrounded by Latin culture is an everyday thing.

When AnnMaria (President of 7GG) and Diana (Project Manager) asked me to post material related to Hispanic Heritage Month, I just pretended I knew what that was about – what else could I do as a Latino not knowing that there’s a month dedicated to your heritage? So I started to investigate and find out about Hispanic people that are changing the negative perception of Latinos around the world. That’s how I got into one of my favorite talks that I’d like to share with you, it’s called My identity is a superpower – not an obstacle by America Ferrera (see her Ted Talk below).

Living in a country, Chile, where only 2% of the population speaks fluent English and working for an American Company like 7 Generation Games, makes me think about the possibilities of what Latinos can do. I mean, even though AnnMaria and Maria (CEO) were born in the US, they have Venezuelan heritage, Diana has Mexican heritage, and the best and most important part is that they are women in a position of authority. Hispanic women in positions of authority are usually represented with a “chancla throw” and being overbearing. However, in this case, the positions of authority held were earned by working hard every day and in regards to 7 Generation Games, working hard to make children smarter by playing video games. Isn’t that cool?!

Let’s embrace our Hispanic heritage. Here’s a list of my favorite bilingual video games you can play or give to your children/nephew/class to learn about their Hispanic heritage:
